About EMF Pollution & EHS

Electromagnetic Frequency (EMF) radiation is emitted by all electrical devices as well as devices that emit radio waves such as kitchen appliances, computers and cell phones. If you are like most people, you have electronic devices in your home and office. You may even have a number of these devices in the bedroom where your body is suppose to rest and repair each night. EMF's can impact your physical and emotional health. They can interfere with the quality of your sleep, aggravate nervousness and even cause families to be more argumentative than usual.

EMF's are powerful and chances are, you are exposed to some level of them. You may have an older computer that emits high levels of EMF's, but you don't have to have it on the table next to your bed.

EMF Symptoms

Based on published third party research

  • Sleep disorders (melatonin suppression)
  • Chronic pain, night pain and other “unexplainable” pain
  • Muscle and joint pain (especially in the hips and back)
  • Leg and foot pain (usually nothing shows up on X-rays)
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Skin rashes and irritability
  • Depression, Anxiety and Irritability
  • Memory loss and/or difficulty concentrating
  • Headaches
  • Dizziness & Nausea
  • Muscle weakness, fatigue, numbness, spasms
  • Ringing and other sounds in the ears
  • “Flu-like” symptoms, respiratory problems
  • The ongoing suppression of melatonin
  • Leukemia
  • Cancer (breast, brain and prostate
  • Damage to the blood brain barrier
  • Alzheimer's disease
  • Miscarriages (interferes with mitosis)
  • ALS (Lou Gehrig's disease)
  • Multiple Sclerosis (MS) and MS-like symptoms
  • Depression and Anxiety
  • Hypertension (increase in blood pressure)
  • Diabetes (increase in blood sugar)
  • Increased absorption of mercury into the body (perhaps linked to Autism & Alzheimer's disease)
  • Thyroid problems in children (ADD/AHDD, OCD)

Scientists now believe as much as 40-50% of the population may be unknowingly experiencing symptoms of Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS), with 3-5% of the cases severe enough to significantly impact an individual’s overall quality of life.

According to World Health Organization (WHO EHS is characterized by a variety of non-specific symptoms that differ from individual to individual.

EHS symptoms

Dermatological symptoms:

  • redness,
  • tingling, and burning sensations as well as,

Neurasthenic and Vegetative symptoms:

  • fatigue,
  • tiredness,
  • concentration difficulties,
  • dizziness,
  • nausea,
  • heart palpitation,
  • and digestive disturbances.

Many EHS sufferers improve quickly and symptoms disappear, or are lessened, when they are returned to an environment where EMF sources have been reduced or eliminated.

The best understood biological effect of EMF’s is to cause dielectric heating. For example, touching an antenna while a transmitter is in operation can cause severe burns. Each frequency in the electromagnetic spectrum is absorbed by living tissue at a different rate, called the specific absorption rate or SAR, which has units of watts per kilogram (W/kg). This heating effect varies with the frequency of the electromagnetic energy.

Some research has found that exposure to elevated levels of ELF (extremely low frequencies) magnetic fields such as those originating from electric power transmission lines may be implicated in a number of adverse health effects. These include, but are not limited to:

  • childhood Leukemia,
  • adult leukemia,
  • breast cancer,
  • neurodegenerative diseases (such as amyotrophic lateral sclerosis),
  • miscarriage,
  • and clinical depression.

Mobile Phone Radiation & Health

Part of the radio waves emitted by a mobile telephone handset are absorbed by the human head. The radio waves emitted by a GSM handset, can have a peak power of 2 watts, and a US analog phone had a maximum transmit power of 3.6 watts. Other digital mobile technologies, such as CDMA and TDMA, use lower output power, typically below 1 watt.

Mobile phones and cancer

In 2006 a large Danish study about the connection between mobile phone use and cancer incidence was published. It followed over 420,000 Danish citizens over 20 years and showed no increased risk of cancer ("Cellular Telephone Use and Cancer Risk: Update of a Nationwide Danish Cohort", J. Schuz
